Running the Block
Running the block is a technique to help you get the rebound/collect position when your defender is working hard to not let you into that space. At the start of this animation the female attacker is trying to take the position but is unable. They then run the block.
- Move to a point close to the post where you can receive the ball from a teammate. The defender stays inside to prevent the rebound position being taken.
- An attacking teammate passes the ball to the player running the block.
- An opposite sex teammate runs to stand next to the player running the block, and is given the ball.
- The player running the block moves around their teammate. Their defender follows them, which means the attacker is now on the inside and has a rebound position.
- The four players at the post are now in a 2-2 setup. The player with the ball can either stay there in a feed/assist position, or pass the ball out and move out to be a shooter, as is demonstrated here.
Note that the defender must follow the attacker in step 4 - if they try to sneak around the back of the other players and keep the inside position it becomes easy for the attacker to step away from the post and get the ball for a close undefended shot.
